Friday September 19, Hans Alf Gallery invites everyone to join the opening of Amalie Jakobsen's exhibition "Heavy Metal".

Heavy Metal is the first solo exhibition by Danish sculptor Amalie Jakobsen with Hans Alf Gallery. For this exhibition she has created sculptures in various metals: bronze, copper and aluminum. These materials are demanding, but in her hands, with force and persistence, they are shaped into beautiful, aesthetic objects.

The exhibition consists of two series: Osculating Orbits and Asteroids. Both are inspired by the movement of outer space, and convert them to concrete, sensory objects. Using the language of aesthetics, Jakobsen translates natural phenomena in space and provides form to concepts and forces that otherwise lie beyond human perception.

In the Osculating Orbits series, the works revolve around relations between massive objects that move through gravitational fields and undergo energy exchanges. Two separate circuits approach each other without overlapping – they merely graze each other like cosmic kisses. These metal sculptures balance between the weight of the material and the lightness of the form, and the massive sculptures appear weightless and effortless.

The same confrontation with the weight of the material occurs in Jakobsen’s asteroid series, where the artworks show the influence of the complicated and physically demanding work with copper and bronze, while at the same time being delicately refined and appearing as complete and beautiful objects. They are sculptures, mobiles, and reliefs: Some hang on walls, others from the ceiling, as if floating in a room without gravity. The asteroids engage themselves in a discussion about the relationship between technology, nature and art, pointing to the problems associated with the exploitation of natural resources. Both on Earth and in outer space.

With Heavy Metal, Amalie Jakobsen invites us to experience the connections between the concrete and the cosmic. The sculptures give access to an aesthetic experience where weight, movement, and beauty form a sensory narrative revolving around the cycles of nature and the infinite circuit of the universe. In the encounter with the works, the gallery is transformed into a microcosm where the vastness of the universe is reflected in the artist’s sculptures.

"Heavy Metal" opens on Friday September 19 and will be on view through Saturday October 17.
